Housing Guide for FCC Florence Employees: Finding Your Home in Pueblo West and Pueblo County

Welcome to the premier housing resource for the dedicated professionals of the Federal Correctional Complex (FCC) Florence.

Whether you are a newly commissioned Correctional Officer (CO), a Case Manager at the ADX, or a Rec Spec at the FCI, finding the right home is the first step in your Colorado career.

While the complex is situated in Fremont County, many employees choose to call Pueblo West and the surrounding Pueblo County home.

Here is why:

The FCC Florence Housing Guide - Here's What You Need to Know

The Commute: A Straight Shot to the Complex

FCC Florence is located on a 640-acre reservation at the base of the Rocky Mountains, approximately 25 miles from the Pueblo West Wal-Mart.

For those living in Pueblo West, the commute is a convenient half-hour drive along Highway 50 and Highway 67. This scenic route keeps you close to the action of the city while allowing for a peaceful transition between your shift and home life.

In addition to the beautiful Rocky Mountains, you will also see antelope, an occasional elk, and other wildlife during your commute.

Also, the Ft. Carson Army Installation is close so you will see many helicopters and an occasional fighter jet during this Highway 50 commute. The fighter jet flight pattern is from north to south at the Pueblo County/Fremont County line.

Where FCC Staff Live: The Florence Complex Overview

We understand that as a member of the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) team, you may work at any of the four distinct facilities within the complex:

  • USP Florence ADMAX (ADX Florence): The nation’s only administrative maximum-security facility, often called the "Alcatraz of the Rockies" or "Supermax." By the way, the rumor that it is underground is false.

  • USP Florence High: A high-security United States Penitentiary.

  • FCI Florence: A medium-security Federal Correctional Institution.

  • Federal Prison Camp: A minimum-security satellite camp.

No matter which facility you are assigned to, Pueblo West offers a diverse range of housing options. From modern suburban developments to properties with acreage, perfect for storing your outdoor gear, RVs, trailers, and even horses.

Why Choose Pueblo West & Pueblo County?

Many Correctional Officers (COs) and FCC staff prefer Pueblo West for its unique lifestyle benefits:

  1. Recreation at Your Doorstep: After a high-stakes shift, there is no better way to unwind than at the nearby Lake Pueblo State Park. Enjoy boating, fishing, hiking, and world-class mountain biking just minutes from your front door.

  2. Affordability: Compared to Colorado Springs or Denver, Pueblo County offers significantly more "house for your dollar." This is ideal for staff looking to maximize their federal locality pay and benefits.

  3. Community & Schools: Pueblo West is a family-oriented community with highly-rated schools and a growing selection of dining and shopping options.

  4. Weather: Known for its mild winters and "banana belt" climate, you’ll enjoy more sunny days and less snow than our neighbors to the north and west.
